A lot of the frustration we Christians experience in life is due to our expectations. We have particular ideas about how God should work, about how He will meet our needs and see us through in difficult times. When it seems that He doesn't see us through, we become disappointed in God and vulnerable to succumbing to counterfeit comforts.
It is easy to forget that this journey can be called the "way of faith." That is, it is not the way of sight, nor is it the way of feeling. Faith has the capacity to take us beyond what we can see and through whatever we feel. It's a wonderful thing, but by nature we resist it. It couldn't possibly be more counterintuitive. Faith, by its nature requires that you can't really see what you're doing or know for sure where you'll end up, this side of Heaven.
Logical understanding isn't faith. Reason, as important as it is, isn't faith. Faith is described as an "assurance" and "conviction" (Hebrews 11:1) that does not depend on observable evidence.
Faith is not something we are expected to conjure up. Humanly manufactured faith is not faith. True faith has an "Author" (Source) and "Perfector" (Developer)- Jesus (Hebrews 12:2). The faith that comes from Him empowers you to keep moving when nothing seems to make sense and when you think you are too pooped to go on. Faith is what motivates you to stay connected to Jesus in the face of extreme disappointment, when the person you love dies prematurely in spite of the prayers of many for healing, or when you continue to struggle financially even though you are doing your absolute best to work hard and to responsibly steward your resources. In other words, faith is what is needed to get you through hard times. It's so powerful that we can rejoice when we face trial, because we know that God will see us through.
