For all of our conveniences, life remains pretty stressful for the typical American. There are bills to pay, relationships to nurture and, there is work! Add to this any form of sickness, chronic pain or relational conflict and the degree of stress can become unmanageable. It's not too hard to turn to counterfeit comforts like alcohol, porn, over-eating or an affair.
It's easy in such seasons to go into hiding. We don't want others to know. We don't want to be a bother. Your mental, emotional and spiritual health actually depend on you being a bother. In difficult times it is normal to feel frustrated, angry, tired and lonely. When you feel like this, you are in grave danger. You have an opportunity to turn to God and invite Him into the mess or you may try to handle things on your own. If you choose the latter, you will make choices that you will regret. Choose the former, and discover the adventure of deep union with the One who loves you as you are and not as you should be.
God describes Himself as "an ever present help in times of trouble"(Psalm 46:1).
Be a "bother."Call out to Him in the context of your Christian community. Watch how God meets you, comforts you, offers you succor (a juicy word worth looking up) and strengthens you. Give yourself permission to feel overwhelmed. Until you acknowledge that this is how you actually feel, you'll stay stuck.
