We settle for a very small view of God when we reduce His Word to a utilitarian value; when we assume reading and studying it for its own sake is the point. When we use it to prove, for example, the reliability of the biblical record, when we want to use it to argue the nature of man's beginnings.
Author Brian Zahnd says it so much better:
"The Bible is not interested in giving (or even competing with) scientific explanations. The Bible is working on a different project than scientific inquiry. What Scripture gives us is inspired glimpses into the divine mystery. The point is never to 'prove' the Bible, but to enter into the mystery through the portal of Scripture."
Read God's Word to experience Him. To marinate in His life. Don't try to become an expert, mastering ancient languages and being able to parse the nuances of difficult theological concepts and failing to realize that any study of Scripture that does not lead to encounter is not only a colossal waste of time; it is a savage misuse of God's Word and a misunderstanding of His ways. The Kingdom of God belongs to the likes of children. Simple. Humble. Innocently seeking, mentally delighting in being pushed by Papa in a swing, loving to simply sit in His lap.
Such an approach is worth the investment of your time. Ask the Spirit who inspired the human writers of Scripture to write it, to inspire you to enter the mystery of divine encounter.
